FOOD PHOTOGRAPHY
AND GASTRONOMIC

What is food photography?

Perhaps we have heard thousands of times say that gastronomic photographs are photos of or food, in reality this concept is somewhat erroneous, because within gastronomic photography there is food photography, but in reality this gastronomic photographic style encompasses everything that is surrounded by food, including beverages, establishment, employees, services and more.

But to generalize we can say that in food photography attractive and inviting images are produced to consume the photographed food that is offered in a place or company, that is, it is a product photography, where the product is food.

Gastronomic photography, in addition to encompassing food photography, we can include the situations that we can find with food, such as photographs of chefs working in the kitchen, or waiters serving the dish, or customers tasting them, we can also use these photos for advertising purposes or in the use of packaging or containers, menus and/or web pages of restaurants, bars, or any business within the restoration or even in cookbooks.
It is clear that many may think that with a smartphone we can do everything since they have super cameras and thousands of filters, and surely we wonder

Why do we need to invest in a professional gastronomic photographer if we can do everything with our phone camera?
Well, perhaps an amateur with a smartphone can take very nice photos for personal use, but when we are a company or have an activity where we want to attract new customers, we cannot give our products an amateur quality, and the difference is evident when there are more factors involved than a nice picture on a phone, such as understanding lighting and how to control it to highlight the essential aspects of our product, food, to make it palatable and to get new customers. In addition to knowing how to set the scene with the correct props (I explain in the next point what they are), understanding the client and responding to their needs, all these things and some more that I will explain later, are determining factors when it comes to showing your products, and what quality are you offering, the more amateru the photos will be, the more amateurs your place will be.

What are porps, how and when to use them?

The so-called props for gastronomic or food photography are all the extra things that we use when composing a gastronomic photo, such as backgrounds with various themes, such as brick walls, or wood, or with nice gradients. Various plates or crockery are also very important, whether in sizes, shapes, colors, designs, materials, as well as cutlery, spoons, forks, knives and also the colors that we can represent with a tablecloth or napkins, even wooden slats , to present our star food before being served on a plate.
In addition, the typical accessories that usually give a very special touch are salt shakers, pepper shakers, spice holders and a large number of culinary toiletry bags that will make your photo incredible!
And this is where the art and experience of the food photographer come, knowing how to combine and illuminate these props, thus obtaining an incredible quality in their result and standing out from the amateurs.

Food photography and how to take gastronomic photography

As we have said so far, food photography is really an art and a great challenge for a photographer, since he has to know about lighting and highlight its qualities in order to "sell" this particular product to potential customers, he also has to have creativity and style when combining the props with the product.
That is why you also have to know what types of angles are suitable for the correct representation of the dish, such as 45º, which would be the angle seen from the consumer's point of view, that is, from the diner who is going to enjoy your dish, so So it would be a natural angle.
Then we have the overhead photography or 90º angle, here we will see a complete composition of our plate with its props, showing the combination of all of them, if any, it is a high point of view.
Another angle that we can see our photo is almost at 0º or 180º, it is almost an angle equal to our plate but with a slight inclination to be able to enjoy its three-dimensionality.
And as the last factor of relevance is to take photos of the details, with a special objective or lens, called a macro, we can have impressive details of our plate, giving free rein to the imagination of savoring those details in a photograph. Here we can play with many different angles, to vary the points of view of our photo.
Or for example if we have a cheeseburger, knowing how to put it in a way that is seen in our image and that it looks like it melts on the meat or that if it is a meat roasted on a grill, that the details of the marks of a grilled meat, as you can see in this image.

Another of the qualities that a food or gastronomic photographer must have is the speed in taking the photos, that is, the experience counts a lot, since we well know that a dish can be spoiled after several minutes served and it would no longer represent our product in an appetizing way, such as with fresh fruits and vegetables, or foods that melt or sauces served, or often take advantage of the heat of the plate to highlight the natural smoke or steam that a meal just removed from the fire emits.

Therefore, as a food photographer we must know when is the right moment to take the photo and not lose any other moment on our plate. That is why the gastronomic photographer must be a professional and not an amateur. And as you will see in our gastronomic photos, our quality speaks for itself of our professionalism and experience in food photography. In addition, the typical accessories that usually give a very special touch are salt shakers, pepper shakers, spice holders and a large number of culinary toiletry bags that they will make your photo amazing!

And this is where the art and experience of the food photographer come, knowing how to combine and illuminate these props, thus obtaining an incredible quality in their result and standing out from the fans.

A professional photographer also knows how not to overdo the setting and fill the photo with things that bother the eye and make our food lose prominence. On certain occasions, few things have to be placed, they can have much more acceptance, on others we may have to add more, but always taking care of the detail and the styling of it.

Gastronomic photography edition?

If you are wondering if professional food or gastronomic images are edited, yes, always, and whoever does not can not be considered a professional gastronomic photographer.

As you will have seen in product photography services, the edition is as important or more important than the photo itself, and in gastronomic photography it is no less, since it is still a product, even if it is food.

Therefore you have to edit it, clean it, modify it, highlight the details that are important, correct the colors and contrasts and so on.

What must be taken into account is that, as in any product photo, as professionals, we should never exaggerate and turn an image that comes out of our camera into a complete fake after editing, it is totally counterproductive and would generate a rejection to our consumers. , that is why we repeat a thousand times that if you hire an amateur, you will receive amateur photos and the client will notice it, and will think that you are amateurs in your food and service. Always hire professionals in gastronomic photography.

Expense or Investment?

And as an important factor that many think, it is the economic factor, how much does a professional gastronomic photographer cost me? In the first instance, you are formulating the question wrong, since the correct way to see it would be, it is not an expense, it is an investment, and we know that the investment is rewarded with benefits, so first ask yourself this question: How much should I invest to some professional gastronomy photos?

Then make a small outline of benefits.

This would be an example of a hypothetical case in which photography services have never been hired, DO NOT take the values as real, since they vary according to the service for each client. It is ONLY an example to visualize how to choose the best option for you.

1 - Amateur photographer. Investment €200 per month, it can give us about 30 beautiful photos per month.

a - Number of visits and interest in our profile or service: It does not exceed 1%

b - Number of potential customers gained in 1 month: If lucky 1

c - Amount of Return on Investment with 1 new client on average €60 for a meal, less food and personal expenses, let's say we have €30 left with luck, that is, we will have amortized almost 7% of the investment with an amateur

d - It would take us about 7 months to cover the €200 investment, but over time we will have continued to invest another €1,400, and in the end it would be counterproductive in terms of investment, image and benefits

e - That is in the hypothetical case of gaining a new customer per month, which may even be less, and then it is up to the local to make them come back

f - There would be no exponential growth over a year

g - Usefulness of a social network to attract customers: Very bad

h - It is no longer considered an investment, but an economic loss

2 - Professional gastronomy photographer. €400 per month, with 30 quality photos edited per month

a - Number of visits and interest in our profile or service: reaches more than 20%

b - Number of potential customers won in 1 month: 4 or 5 approximate

c - Amount of Return on Investment with 4 new clients on average €80 of a meal, having better photos gives better quality of clients so they tend to consume more, less food and personal expenses, let's say we have €50 left with luck, for 4 clients we would have €200 left, that is, we will have amortized 50% of the investment, that is, 70% more than an amateur

d - It would take us about 2 months to cover the investment of €400, over time we will have continued to invest another €800, much less time than it would take for an amateur

e - That is in the hypothetical case of gaining 4 new clients per month, which can even be more, and logically here it also depends on the place to make them come back

f - There would be exponential growth over time

g - Usefulness of a social network to attract customers: Very good

h - Having an exponential growth means that every 2 months we will reduce our return on investment by approximately 50%, that is, in 4 months we would have 75% of the investment, in less than 6 months 100% and after that would be benefits.
